Environmental Policy Statement

Stevens Industries, Inc., is a manufacturer of laminated composite wood products, which include business and institutional furniture. We are dedicated to protecting the environment and the health and safety of our employees, as well as the members of the global community in which we live, through a focused effort to be socially responsible. We are committed to not only meeting but also exceeding compliance with all levels of International, Federal, State and Local environmental regulations. Product Life Cycle analysis provides Stevens with a defined pathway to these goals.

Our product designs and manufacturing processes take into consideration not only the environmental impact of the raw materials used but also the energy consumed, waste generated, recycling and pollution impacts. Stevens gives preferential status to suppliers that are committed to sound environmental policies.

We strive to be good stewards of our natural resources by endeavoring to eliminate pollution generated at the source, frugally using resources and by maximizing the reclamation and recycling of materials. Stevens will support industry standards for the long-term protection of our environment by continuous improvements in our policies and objectives.

Specific examples include, but are not limited to the following:
  • We use only particleboard and medium density fiberboard that are Composite Panel Association (CPA) Eco-Certified Composite (ECC) certified.
  • We use only water-based inks and heavy-metal-free pigments in the printed designs for our decorative papers used in the thermofused laminating process.
  • We use no chrome plating on our proprietary hardware designs.
  • The packaging materials for our products are made of 100% recycled and post consumer paper products.
  • We use water-based glues which contain ultra low levels for VOCs.
  • Stevens Advantage products, excluding stainless steel countertops, have achieved GREENGUARD GOLD Certification for low VOC emissions.
  • Incoming materials are required to be shipped in returnable or reclaimable pallets and containers.
  • We utilize a sophisticated automated process of optimizing woodcutting that reduces wood waste 8-12%.
  • All wood waste is reclaimed or converted into other uses or products. No wood waste goes to a landfill.
  • Incoming packaging and operating materials, including plastics, corrugated, waste oil, metal, fluorescent lamps, etc., are recycled.
  • Energy consumption is conserved through the use of efficient lighting (last upgraded 2011 ), skylighting, monitoring amp consumption and power draw of equipment, reflective roofing, insulation and automatic set back of heating and cooling.
  • Storm water management ponds help reduce harmful erosion and are used for process cooling, saving water and energy.
  • Carpooling and bicycle riding to and from work are promoted through preferential parking.
  • Committed focus by management to ensure everyone at Stevens is aware of our environmental policies and actively engage every employee in the promotion and enforcement of the policies.
  • Our products are in compliance with Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) Title VI and the "Restrictions of Hazardous Substances" E.U. Directive.
  • Stevens supports and admires our employees' personal environmental conservatism and practices.

Green and Sustainable

We believe in sustainable design practices and the manufacturing of products which result in healthy building spaces that minimize the impact on the environment. We believe that everyone involved in the building process should take an active role in implementing responsible consumption guidelines and advance sustainable, innovative building standards.

We are dedicated to protecting our manufacturing plant environment, providing for the health and safety of our employees as well as the world around us. The Stevens Environmental Policy Statement summarizes our commitment. We've also created an Environmental Impact Questionnaire to answer some frequently asked questions. Please read below for additional Green attributes.

Stevens has actively been working to reduce all Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) including formaldehyde content in our products and is at near zero for finished laminated composite panels and furnishings. Stevens products fabricated from TFL and HPL laminated panels contain formaldehyde as an ingredient, which may post outgas at or less than 0.0073 parts per million (ppm). We find no other reportable standard chemicals referred to under the voe rules. This has been determined through the review of MSD (Material Safety Data) sheets for each of the components of the panels in general use at Stevens.

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System™, created by the U.S. Green Building Council, is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. The LEED Rating System was created to transform the built environment to sustainability by providing the building industry with consistent, credible standards for what constitutes a green building. Our efforts to help you achieve LEED credits are summarized on our LEED Statement.

The Composite Panel Association (CPA) is the North American trade association for producers of particleboard (PB), medium density fiberboard (MDF), hardboard (HB) and other compatible products. It is dedicated to increasing the acceptance and use of composite panel products and educating users about their benefits. CPA represents the composite panel industry on technical, environmental, quality assurance and product acceptance issues. As an accredited standard developer for the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), CPA sponsors and publishes industry product standards and participates in the standards development work of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and others. Through CPA's Eco-Certified Composite (ECG) Certification Program, CPA and its certified mills provide a powerful tool for manufacturers of finished products (including components and laminated panels) in communicating the environmental advantages.

Stevens Industries, Inc., continues to improve the company's depth of involvement in environmental long term commitments with the addition of the GREENGUARD GOLD Certification Program and by staying current with the ever changing landscape of rules, guidelines and regulations. Our fully assembled casework and furniture systems and our laminated panels have achieved GREENGUARD GOLD Certification and provide numerous LEED potential contributions for consideration on your current project.

Stevens has taken an active role in assuring compliance to U.S. - Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) - Title VI regulations through our involvement with the Composite Panel Association (CPA) and our continued work with our suppliers. Most, if not all, panel manufacturers are changing to resin system using no added formaldehyde.

Sound and proven forest management practices are a direct result of companies like Stevens Industries aggressively participating in the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) Certification for Chain of Custody. Our Certification was granted by Scientific Certification Systems after completing an extensive audit of the Stevens Manufacturing and Sales processes. Our Chain of Custody certification # is SCS-COC-001662. Please ask about FSC® products.
